393/169 5th month of Uthmor the Giant YO the Bronze Wyvern.
Midday outside the Theren south gate.
I happened across a conversation regarding the tension between Therengia and Ilithi today. I stopped when I recognized Ternith, a man involved with the visit from Talorc a few weeks prior.
I confess I know little enough about the reason for the poor relations, but from what I gather the Baron, a Paladin if the layman in this country can be trusted, is going to marry an outcast. Who I have no idea. I do remember the war Raenilar brought to my homeland and though it caused strife and angered me at the time I have since let go of the trappings of childhood and can understand where this Warrior King stood.
His ancestors outcast, force marched into the desert and left to live or die by their own wit and strength he grew up with tales of their 'persecution'. Enough generations of that and even the most mild mannered of sentients will find the fires of hatred, no matter how poorly stoked they be.
Shard's mistake was not to kill the lot of them. Why march a potential threat into the desert when at best it could result in their death regardless and at worst will result in a conflict some centuries later? Lessons learned I suppose, though I doubt any of the 'nobility' have the stomach for such methods now.
Those who would lead must follow truth. If the truth is that it's better to kill to avoid death later, then you should kill if you wish to avoid the inevitable outcome. Instead they save their stomachs and pass the problem to the next generation. Cowardice has many forms it seems. Mercy has it's place, but rarely on a national scale.
I will endeavor to learn more of this matter if only in the spirit of learning which side I will ally with when the war I feel brewing, comes. While I do hate fighting for the stronger of the sides, rarely does the defeated rise in political power.
Many promotions could be gleaned on a battlefield where any number of accidents can occur.
Aside: I wonder what my parents will think if they see me riding at the forefront of an assault on our homeland?
